Our Historical Artifacts Collection draws inspiration from archaeological excavations, ruins, and artifacts displayed in museums. In this sculpture by Balthasar Permoser (1651–1732), Marsyas, who challenged Apollo to a musical contest, is depicted being flayed alive after losing the competition. The expression on his face and the positioning of his head and shoulders realistically convey the agony endured by Marsyas.
